Model UN students meet for training session
On Sept. 11th, the White Station High Model United Nations Team met in Mrs Duckworth’s room for an informational meeting regarding paper proposals for future competitions.
Model UN is a club dedicated to informing students more about countries in the UN—their weaknesses, strengths, allies or history. The overall goal of Model UN is to unite students through researching diplomatic relations and forming opinions about them.
Members of the club are to choose a country of the UN and plan a position paper based on relevant issues that affect the country. The WSHS team is currently meeting to form committees and develop responses and arguments for a conference next Saturday, September 22nd. Some of the team’s officers are Yash Khiraya (10), Amalie Vacanti (10), Krishna Dasari (11) and Ahmed Motiwala (12).
“Being an officer takes a lot of management and social skills,” Motiwala said. “We’ve taught [the members] how to write resolutions, how to argue and how to defend their positions.”
Indira Mummareddy (9) is drawn to Model UN for its main theme, which is arguing.
“I’ve been in a debate club before,” Mummareddy said. “I like being able to debate and share my opinions.”
