Behind the Scenes: White Station Publications
The Shield and Scribbler staffs play a significant role in representing the student body of White Station. Both staffs are largely student-led and active year-round.
The Shield yearbook staff is responsible for producing a yearbook at the end of the school year. The staff can be found taking photos of memorable events throughout the year, such as pep rallies, to include in the final book.
Jackson Ruddick (10) has been on the Shield staff for 2 years. Ruddick’s role on the staff is making spreadsheets on Photoshop of photos taken throughout the school year.
“Being on the Shield staff has really helped me learn how to work well with others and communicate better,” Ruddick said.
The Scribbler magazine staff hosts numerous “coffee houses” throughout the year. Members of the staff meet every Tuesday to discuss decorating the auditorium and creating a theme.
Anahis Luna (11) is on the Scribbler staff and she takes notes during the weekly meetings. “We pick themes for the coffee house, we pick roles, and sometimes we have ‘bonding days’ where we just hang out,” Luna said. “It’s a very close-knit place.”
A typical coffee house takes place in the auditorium of White Station and runs from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Students involved usually perform on stage for their peers through singing, acting, or comedy. The Scribbler staff is also responsible for producing an art and literary magazine available for sale at the end of each school year.
“Towards the end of the year, we review submissions made and we decide what goes into the final magazine and what doesn’t,” Luna said.
Overall, the activities of Shield and Scribbler staff are often more than what meets the eye.
“Everyone knows each other, and it’s a lot of fun to be a part of,” Luna said.
