White Station clinches first win of the season over Hernando
The opportunity for the Spartan football team to secure their first win came in last night’s game against Hernando. And they capitalized on it.
As soon as the first drive of the game began, it promised action and excitement. Hernando scored the first touchdown of the game on a quick drive down the field, but White Station’s Eli Neal (12) answered back quickly with a run into the end zone to tie the game at 7-7. A quick stop by the Spartan defense and a field goal by kicker Asher Hill (11) gave the Spartans the lead at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was very much a defensive battle between the two teams until the final two minutes of the half in which Hernando scored, giving them the lead at 14-10.
Coming out of the locker room after halftime, the back-and-forth match-up continued when Spartan Greg Rubin (10) snagged a pass in the end zone to give his team the lead, 17-14. Hernando quickly answered with a long run into the end zone to swing the momentum back in their favor.
After Neal scored his second touchdown in the fourth quarter and Hernando responded with one of their own, the Spartans received the ball with three minutes left on the clock. Penalties against Hernando, two successful 3rd down conversions and a successful 4th and 2 conversion set the Spartans up in the red zone.
Neal came through for White Station a third time in the form of the game-winning touchdown in the last 30 seconds of the contest, and the game ended 31-28.
The Spartans will be hoping to carry this momentum into their next game against Arlington next Friday, Sep. 14 at Arlington.
