The competitors are getting ready to start the first half of the knowledge bowl. The competition took place on February 29, 2020 at First Baptist Church on Broad Avenue.

On February 29, students from schools in the Memphis community participated in the 2020 Black History Knowledge Bowl at First Baptist Church on Broad Avenue.

The knowledge bowl brought many challenging questions about famous African-American writers, activists, musicians, athletes, performers, and thinkers.

Throughout the day, competitors competed on topics related to African-American history from the past to present famous people and events.

Mary Pittman (10) competed in the competition for her very first time this year and was glad she did.

“I was kinda scared about competing against others at first, but I got more comfortable once I was there,” Pittman said.

The Knowledge Bowl was hosted by the Memphis police officers from the Community Outreach Program (C.O.P)  in the Memphis area.

The knowledge bowl required schools to compete against each other in teams to see which team would move on throughout the competitions based on their knowledge of African-American history.

“I enjoyed being able to celebrate and share my knowledge of my history and today’s famous people making history,” Pittman said. “It was a chance to remember everything in African-American culture and history.”
