All-City orchestras overtake Overton and Levitt Shell
Select Spartan string musicians had the opportunity to participate in All-City Orchestra, a Shelby County Schools (SCS) wide affair on Oct. 22. Students across the district were chosen to attend the program, which was hosted at Overton High School, with a performance at the Levitt Shell in Overton Park.
There was a packed schedule, full of rehearsals with varying conductors from across the school system. Students had to learn to adapt to each conducting style, as well as the style of each piece being performed.
“The most enjoyable part of the experience was getting to understand how the different conductors teach and how they like their pieces to sound,” Daniel Palmer (11) said.
“I really liked the program…I thought it was very insightful and I did learn a lot.”
Still, it wasn’t all hard work for the participants. Time was allotted to give students the opportunity to network across other schools and grades, a mix-and-mingle of large proportions. This aspect was appreciated by teachers and students as something to expand their horizons.
“I am a sociable person, so being able to talk to others in my same profession and enjoy it as well was really nice. I would attend again,” Palmer said.
