Spiking on all cylinders

The volleyball team gathers for a huddle during their match with East High.

After starting off the season a bit rough, the Lady Spartan volleyball team has turned things around. The team is comfortably perched at the top of the district with a record of 10-0, at least one Division 1 bound senior and a heap of young talent

The Spartans are more than just a team. The chemistry these girls share is electric. On any given game day, nicknames and lighthearted chants echo throughout the gym, accompanied by synchronized handshakes and spirited team rituals.

The best word to describe the recent in-district showings by the Spartans is ‘domination’. It seems competition for the team is few and far between, as the Spartans boast a 10-0 record in district games this year, and a total record of 15-10. Looking toward the playoffs, the Lady Spartans should be a top ranked team and are definitely a force to reckon with.

On the rare occasion that things get rough, the team has a plan.

“At the end of the game we talk about what we did wrong, and how we can improve for the next game,” Alex Benton (11) said.

The Spartans aren’t just looking to dominate for one season. They are looking to build on this success for years to come. With the existing level of young talent , this dream may become a reality for the team.

“Every year we get really good freshman, and next year I feel like we’re going to be even better even though we’re going to lose three seniors,” Benton said.

All in all, the Spartans have come to play.
