If you were a flower or plant, which one would you be?
“Some sort of succulent, because I’m low maintenance and can weather a lot of environments.”
If you could time travel to any era, when and where would you go?
“I taught British literature for 18 years, so part of me automatically goes to some period in British history. But then I’m also kind of into genealogy … It’d be so cool to pop in to where my great-great-great-whatever-grandparents are. I’m [also] inclined to say Victorian England, but that would also depend on my social class. Or maybe westward expansion [in] America — my family and the role that they played in that.”
What current trends are baffling to you?
“As an older millennial, it is wild to me to see you guys wearing the things that we wore in high school — and it was a bad decision in the late 90s, early 2000s. And so to see it being worn again, I’m like, ‘Why? Did we not learn that those weren’t great choices?’ But everything cycles, I get it.”
What is your first memory from school?
“My kindergarten class at Grahamwood [Elementary School] … I had two non-English speakers in my class, which in the late 80s was not common. One spoke French; one spoke Spanish. I remember being asked to assist them, and my uncle’s from El Salvador, so he got called up to the school to help work with the student [who spoke Spanish] … Probably those early days of helping classmates who couldn’t speak the language, and then I later became one of them when my family moved to Germany. So I guess it [came] full circle.”

What TV show would you want to be in? Which one would you not want to be in?
“Maybe ‘Gilmore Girls.’ It just seems like a really peaceful place. It’s [been] my comfort watch over the years. What I wouldn’t want to be in? ‘Criminal Minds.’ Too much of a psychological thriller for me.”
What is the most adventurous thing you’ve done lately?
“I don’t know if this is really adventurous, but I’ve started doing contract work as a graphic designer for local political campaigns and candidates. I’ve actually had no experience in [graphic design]. I just taught myself on Canva how to make logos and now I’m making media kits and signs and shirts … I’m making the designs for them, and I have no formal training in that.”
If you could time travel to any era, when and where would you go?
“I would travel to either the future because we’re living in, yet again, unprecedented times — I’m a millennial, so my whole life has been unprecedented times — or maybe the 90s as an adult … To live as an adult when housing prices were low and everybody had good credit [would be great].”
What current trends are baffling to you?
“Being on FaceTime all the time. Why are we not texting [or] just calling or leaving each other alone? Kids are obsessed with just being on FaceTime, not to talk about anything specific, [but] just sit[ting] on FaceTime as they go about their day. That is so strange to me. Also, please stop FaceTiming in public places.”
