New year, new me. New fashion ideas, new outfits. You open Pinterest in hopes of finding something trendy to wear. However, there’s just no luck there. You turn to TikTok, looking for influencers with some style, and instead, you become exposed to a world of limitless creative expression through textiles.
2024 had many trends and many new styles that came and went at a fast pace. This rapidity led to the fast fashion industry becoming popular throughout the past few months. Fast fashion is cheap, quickly produced and sold at a low price. Fast fashion has been a trend for many years. In 2024 TikTok shop and Temu products became largely sought-after, increasing fast fashion production of Y2K, knitwear, camo and cheetah print clothing. These fashion trends were especially popular among Gen Z, as many influencers and celebrities promoted the clothing styles. Designers like Law Roach, Miu Miu, Prada, Saint Laurent and Alaïa also influence fashion trends and style
“[Law Roach] really influences the world because he has so much say over so many different celebrities,” London Haines (12) said. “So people are really looking at the celebrities, but they really need to be paying attention to their stylists.”
Although 2024 had numerous popular fashion trends, multiple were controversial. Many people believed there needed to be a reduction in the normalization of pajamas at school. In addition, Teen Vogue stated that bloomers should be left in 2024, believing undergarments should not be worn in public. Mini bubble skirts were considered hard to style and a largely purchased product from fast fashion brands. Some people also think the ‘baggy jeans look’ will no longer be as popular, predicting a cutback of baggier jeans in 2025.
“I think baggy jeans are actually not gonna be as trendy because it’s kind of getting played out,” Henry Tang (11) said. “I think what I [see] a lot now is actually [flared jeans].”
From luxury to vintage to streetwear, 2024 was filled with many trending brands. Brands like Hollister, American Eagle and Aeropostale have influenced the clothing preferences among Gen Z. Many people think tank tops and tube tops will continue to trend during the summer with unique colors.
“I think either really neon colors are gonna pop back up or I think something neutral is gonna come [this summer],” Haines said.
Adidas was a popular shoe brand in 2024, with Adidas Campuses and Sambas trending last year. Shoe brands such as Nike, Balenciaga, New Balance and Puma were all popular and are predicted to continue to increase in popularity. Like Adidas Sambas, which came out in 1949, Pumas might have their own comeback, with old shoes becoming trendy once again. According to Overkillshop, a prediction was made that the Puma Palermo sneakers, Asics Skyhand OG and Nike Field General will become popular.
“I want to make a prediction,” Haines said. “I feel like Pumas are going to come [back]. Adidas [and] Nike [had their moment, and] Pumas haven’t really had their moment in a long time, so I think they’re gonna come up with something.”
Fashion brings out the creative elements of people by acting as an expression of their identity through their outfits. From wearing favorite colors, patterns and prints to accessorizing with random, eccentric pieces, people can express themselves without words.
“Fashion is the self-expression of who you are on the inside, but just translates through your clothing,” Tang said. “It brings out who you are, it brings out what you like, it brings out the type of person you are.”
