Known for her beehive hair, iconic fashions, and being the queen to the king of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Priscilla Presley is an iconic figure in pop culture. Around a year and a half after the release of the Elvis movie, Priscilla earned her own film, directed by Sofia Coppola. Released on November Third, 2023, Priscilla follows the life of Priscilla Presley from the time she met Elvis to the end of their relationship.
“I don’t think very many people at the time…knew about their relationship struggles. I think Priscilla did the isolation [theme] well.” Christian Brothers student Cannon Haney said.
Director Sofia Coppola is known for her other popular films such Lost In Translation and The Virgin Suicides. Her works are most noted for their unique color palettes, intimate shots, and feminine, aesthetically pleasing imagery, all reflected in Priscilla.
“One thing I did like [about the production] was the fact that there was no Elvis music whatsoever, it was all original music from the sixties. I thought that really added to it, because it’s a story about Priscilla, and not Elvis.” Haney said.
Priscilla and Elvis met in Germany, when Priscilla was around fourteen years old in 1959. The two tied the knot in 1967, and later divorced in 1972. The two remained in close contact until Elvis’s death in 1977, despite having a tumultuous relationship full of love, heartbreak, and scandal.
“I think the statement [Coppola] was trying to make was that things are more complex than meets the eye. Haney said.
