Girl on fire: Jennifer Lawrence
Jennifer Lawrence: If you’ve seen a magazine, you know her. If you watch late night TV shows, you know her. If you have a Tumblr, Facebook, Twitter, you know her. If you’ve watched any of the current movies, you know her.
Lawrence is constantly the subject Hollywood and media headlines, and for once, this is not attributed to scandalous acts. No one is getting drunk, no one is stripping and no one is giving lap dances. In fact, she is excelling, having won an Oscar and two Golden Globe Awards.
People just love her. When you type “Why we love” into the Google search bar, the third one down, right under football and dogs, is none other than Jennifer Lawrence.
Lawrence has the ability to entrance us in her various roles, from serious, goal-oriented Katniss Evergreen from “The Hunger Games” to subdued, dysfunctional Tiffany from “Silver Linings Playbook.” But try scrolling through Buzzfeed or the humor section on Pinterest, and she’ll also make you laugh simply because of how silly she is.
In all seriousness, Jennifer Lawrence is a great role model for women (and even men) everywhere. Lawrence even considers the fact that she knows she will influence the younger generation and thus aims to teach them what’s right.
“I’m never going to starve myself for a part…I don’t want little girls to be like, ‘Oh, I want to look like Katniss, so I’m going to skip dinner…I was trying to get my body to look fit and strong- not thin and underfed.”
Beyond the part, she admits to liking food and eating it – a lot of it. She’s tripped walking up stairs, ripping her dress. She doesn’t always know “who” she’s wearing – she just knows it’s a dress. She calls things how she sees them. She doesn’t act famous; she acts real.
And it’s this realness that we relate to – that makes us think that perhaps, just maybe, there is a Hollywood star with whom we share qualities. It could be that we relate to her because we see her as someone we’d go to a movie with. She is the best friend that we may not have had.
When we live in a society plagued with cliched Hollywood actresses going after only a look, we should take a few tips from the exception. We should say the truth and have fun with it. We should be uniquely us – all of which Jennifer Lawrence exemplifies.
