As the mask comes off, the dark comes to light and long-kept secrets are let loose. Tyler the Creator, a starring American rapper, released his eighth album “Chromakopia” on Oct. 28, 2024. This album marks a departure in both story and style from his previous works. He captures his journey into adulthood and learns the truth behind his father’s absence, opening a new chapter in his life.
“I really like ‘Take Your Mask Off,’ because to me, it means to be yourself and stop acting like someone you’re not,” Markos McCargo (10) said. “When you’re acting like someone you’re not, you’re not as happy as you could be and you’re missing out on a lot of life opportunities.”
The delivered story is in many ways impactful, but one of the most important begins with sound. The album’s instrumentation stood out to many, incorporating marching band elements in some tracks and featuring a range of diverse collaborators. The core musicality enhances the songs, deepening the emotional impact of the lyrics.
“I’ve listened to all of these songs, and I just pay attention to the instrumentals because I’ve always had this connection with music,” Valery Ferraro (9) said. “I don’t pay attention to the lyrics, I just pay attention to the instruments and vocals.”
Tyler the Creator’s music combines various genres, such as hip-hop, jazz and soul music, however each song harmonizes together and fits like a puzzle piece on his new album. It has become evident—not only in his background music—that standing out is something Tyler is known for and strives for. His dynamic performances have been known to often be intense and emotionally charged. In his Chromakopia performance, he comes marching in, and as the music warps, the performance shifts in structure and reveals an authentic and raw experience for many.
“He’s just kind of marching around by himself with a little mask on,” Alissa Burlison said. “I like it; he’s weird and theatrical.”
These performances may not appeal to everyone, but they offer an experience that fosters a deeper connection for some. They showcase an artistic approach that many believe sets Tyler’s shows apart from others. One difference from his previous albums is the maturity and depth of emotion, which may resonate with listeners facing similar experiences.
In the album, Tyler’s mother reveals that his father did not abandon them but actually wanted to be part of his life. This revelation challenges what Tyler had believed, sparking new emotions and unanswered questions. This situation reflects a reality many people face, creating a connection that typical songs might not achieve.
“I relate a little bit to ‘Like Him,’ where he [sings] about ‘Do I look like him?’,” McCargo said. “I’ve had conversations with my mom saying I do look a lot more like my father than my brother [does].”
Some describe Tyler the Creator’s music as direct and unfiltered, expressing emotions exactly as they are felt. This raw energy takes listeners on a rollercoaster ride through the ups and downs of various themes.
“I get super amped up for some songs and other songs are just like ‘Oh, I’m thinking super deep thoughts now’,” Burlison said. “But that’s how [Tyler the Creator] is.”
Overall, his music spans a wide range of styles, appealing to diverse audiences and potentially introducing fans to new genres. He has a distinctive sound, easily recognizable among others. In addition, his lyrics resonate with many listeners, conveying meaningful messages in his own unique way.
“It’s music I can go back to and actually listen to,” McCargo said. “It’s music I can relate to because I’ve been in a lot of these [same mental] places.”
