Jason’s Deli’s “Reuben THE Great” sandwich is a concoction of hot corned beef, Swiss, sauerkraut, and Thousand Island dressing, grilled on rye. The deli is just one of many in Memphis to boast high quality sandwiches and subs.

The clash of tangy sauces, the savor of meats, veggies, and cheeses—there are few things better than gobbling down a freshly made sub sandwich, tailored to your taste. From fast food to fancy deli, there’s a variety of subs available in Memphis, begging the question, “Where to?”

When people hear the word “sub,” the sandwich-making giant Subway likely comes to mind. During my visit, I had the pleasure of sampling the Steak & Cheese, a fan favorite. The gooey cheese interlaced with the finely-cut steak made for a hearty meal, but more importantly, I enjoyed the freedom to customize my own food. With the variety Subway offers, I had no trouble creating my ideal bread, stuffing my sandwich full with lettuce, spinach, jalapeños.

“I love Subway because I can see what they’re making. Also, I can tell them to add more of one ingredient because I like a lot of things,” David Ford (12) said.

Taking a step up from fast food, I visited the fast-casual restaurant Jason’s Deli and ordered the famous Reuben THE Great. What struck me the most about the Reuben was the contrast between the crunch of the bread and the soft layers of beef and Swiss cheese inside. Each bite came with a burst of flavor.

“I feel like all their food is really high quality, so I always enjoy eating there,” Autumn McCray (11) said.

Finally, overshadowed by the larger chains are smaller, more local sub shops, like the newly reopened Finos. From the outside, the midtown deli doesn’t look like much, but inside, the quaint atmosphere and wafting aroma immediately make you feel at home. Each sandwich is made with great care, the quality unparalleled by others.

“They have the best bread because it never gets soggy. All of their stuff is just so fresh and, ugh, I just love it so much,” Zoe Wolfe (11) said.

Next time you’re craving a delicious meal, do your taste buds a flavor and venture into the eclectic world of subs Memphis has to offer.
