Scrunchie By Ky: A Student-Run Business

Kyah McKinney’s (11) logo for her business: Scrunchies By Ky. McKinney sews scrunchies and sells them at a price of $1 for 3 and $2 for 5.

Scrunchies: they can be worn in your hair in a stylish updo or on your wrist as a bracelet. On any given day, there is always someone wearing a scrunchie at White Station. They’re in style, and Kyah McKinney (11) is supplying the demand.

Starting her business did not take hours of planning and preparation. Instead, it was a spur-of-the-moment thought that managed to mold itself into a bigger idea.

“To be honest, it was three in the morning, and I got really bored, so I was like, ‘I’m going to make a scrunchie’…I just looked up the video…and I was really good at it, so I kept doing it,” McKinney said.

After mastering this newfound skill and sewing about 15 scrunchies, McKinney decided to post them on Instagram and thus, Scrunchie By Ky was born.

Since starting her business about two and a half months ago, McKinney has learned new tricks to expand and enhance her work. Now, she uses a machine to sew her scrunchies.

“I did hand-sow them at one point, but it took an hour for each, and if I had a lot of orders it would take all day,” McKinney said.

In retrospect, McKinney feels that running this business by herself has taught her skills that she would not otherwise have.

“I’ve learned how to be professional with people. Even if it’s just my friends, I try to be professional with them,” McKinney said. “When they are asking a question, I try to respond as maturely as possible.”

McKinney plans to continue supplying people with scrunchies for at least a few more years.
