ShelbyMarie Amos defies the norm at White Station. She has branched out into something unique: co-hosting her own radio show.

On channel 88.5 FM, the Voice of Shelby County Schools radio station supplies a variety of entertainment and information. In order to provide different perspectives, SCS wanted someone young to have a voice on their station. Amos’s mother got her an interview for the radio internship.

“One day she came and picked me up from school and she was like ‘You have an interview,’ and I didn’t even know and so we went there and we talked to the two main guys, the manager and producer of the radio station, and I just told them I was interested, I filled out my application and started my internship,” Amos(12) said.

Amos’s job as a radio DJ consists of introducing songs and artists as well as chatting with employees and students of Shelby County Schools in spotlight pieces for outstanding achievements. This not only gives schools pride, but also gives recognition to those deserving within the community. The radio station does not conform to certain types of music or topics, and it’s helpful to those of Shelby County Schools.

“We keep the parents and students informed instead of just listening to rap music or pop music,”  Amos said.

Through the internship, Amos has been given other opportunities aside from broadcasting. After the editor of “Love Girls” magazine heard the program, Amos was asked to host the award show for the magazine on October 11 of this year.

“It’s given me a lot of experience. Not only did I do radio but I also did a little reporting on the television side as well,” Amos said.

Amos has considered pursuing radio and television broadcasting in college, which will give her an advantage over other broadcast students.

“Going into this field of broadcasting and journalism, it actually makes me think about actually doing that as either a major or minor in college,” Amos said.

The internship has provided her with the opportunity to get her name out in the broadcasting world, and also a unique responsibility and position. Amos is the youngest radio personality on the 88.5 panel, setting her apart. The adults and friends in her life see her as more responsible and mature.

Amos has grown from this internship, and is already playing a key role in decisions about her future.

“It really has prepared me, because not everyone is given that opportunity,” Amos said.
