Pitch Perfect

Key of She is White Station’s High School’s dynamic new all girls A capella group. This year, Key of She became an official group, formed by White Station’s choir director, Nikisha Williams. Williams describes forming the group as another outlet for the choir girls to “express themselves”.
“When I was in college I was in a A capella group and I knew what it did for me as a musician and I wanted my girls to have the same experience,” Williams said.
From a practical perspective A capella groups are less common than choirs, making it a more viable avenue for competition. In contrast to choir, the A cappella genre uses vocals as substitution for instruments. For Key of She, the unique personalities and voices of each member blend to produce an orchestra of sound. In terms of musical identity, Williams wants to bring an eclectic sound performing everything from 60s classics to modern pop, R&B, and broadway. In preparation for performances and eventual competition, Key of She practices twice every week. Morgan Lumpkin (11) described the practice schedule as “hard work”, yet this does not take the joy out of singing. The girls are “like sisters,” Lumpkin said.
Enthusiasm for the group was echoed by Kelsey Hodge (11), who stated that the hour and a half rehearsals are “easy to balance with other things”.
We can expect big things from the group this year: Their first performance was on October 25th from 12:30-2:30 PM at East High School’s Suicide Prevention Rally. Following this
performance you can catch Key of She on December 5th at White Station’s Christmas choir concert.
The group is currently fundraising for upcoming competitions. Interested parties can contribute by purchasing hair bows, available from Williams and the Key of She group members.
Moving forward the group members hope to develop their sound and recruit new members who are passionate about singing. “Join because you want to sing, not because you want to be part of a group,” said Constance Poplos (11). Those interested in joining must audition before Williams, with dates yet to be announced.
