White Station offers a wide variety of extracurricular activities, but until recently, few have heard of the illustration club. Members analyze and discuss their different styles of drawing and subjects of interest.

These artists have learned to appreciate and distinguish various styles, ranging from Japanese anime and chibi to traditional American cartoons. Anime is characterized by detailed figures and small pen strokes. Chibi illustrations are small, rounded and cute; they are used to show emotion in characters. American cartoons usually consist of bold lines and square figures.

Led by president Paige Poon (11), the illustration club meets twice a month after school in Mr. Berlin’s room. In addition, they frequently meet at Overton Park to draw and play games.

Each semester, the club works on a “zine,” or magazine, project – a compilation of their illustrations. The group is given a common theme, but the students work on their drawings independently. At the end of the semester, they collect the drawings and look at the various interpretations of the project.
