Frost Bake Shop review

Who doesn’t need a little pick-me-up on a Monday afternoon? Newly opened Frost Bake Shop is open for business all week, unlike Muddy’s, which closes on Mondays.

Located next to James Davis in the Laurelwood Shopping Center, the new bakery opened on August 15. Now just seven weeks into business, Frost Bake Shop has attracted a good amount of attention.

A charming color palette of sky blue, white, grass green, and magenta creates a pleasant atmosphere along with tasteful, unobtrusive music in the background. Plus, this shop does not just sell cupcakes. It sells cupcakes, cakes, cheesecakes, cookies, tiramisu and pies. Frost Bake Shop has diversity covered.

The owner, Bill Kloos, said “We dissected the recipe and figured out what makes it taste good.”

The shop’s large menu allows Kloos to price its goods competitively. Over the first three weeks as a bakery, it has sold over ten thousand cupcakes.

We had been serving desserts for Soul Fish Cafe, Lucchesi’s and St. Jude’s Kay Kafe before we built the store,” Kloos said.

I ordered a slice of tiramisu, a slice of the Gooey Butter Cake, and the signature Strawberry Cupcake. Even before I bit into the strawberry cupcake, my nose was engulfed in the smell of strawberries. This sensation is one I don’t find often, and was definitely a major plus. The icing was soft, the cupcake was not too sweet, and the flavor was fresh.

The Gooey Butter Cake was crispy on the outside, and sweet and buttery on the inside. It was perhaps a little too sweet, but take it with a grain of salt, since I prefer milder desserts.

Frost Bake Shop has the best tiramisu I have ever tasted in Memphis. It was just sweet enough, and its smooth, moist texture complemented the balanced flavor perfectly. It was delectable, fresh, and wholesome. It neither left a bad aftertaste nor tasted cheap. I believe this is an item Frost Bake Shops needs to promote more.

Overall, I am pleasantly surprised by the quality of this new bakery. The variety of items, the quality of the pastries, and the affordable prices makes Frost Bake Shop a welcome newcomer to Memphis. Frost Bake Shop has the potential to be an iconic Memphis restaurant. Go ahead and support your local business. It just might make your life sweeter.
